The NFLSimulatoR
package provides an array of functions
to enable the simulation of plays/drives and evaluate game-play
strategies in the National Football League (NFL). This vignette
demonstrates the basics of using the package.
The package provides functions for downloading play-by-play data from
both nflscrapR
and nflfastR
by
year. The prep_pbp_data()
function will then clean and
prepare the data for use in the sampling functions that are included in
NFLSimulatoR
.

The NFLSimulatoR::sample_play()
function is the basic
building block for contructing hypothethical drives and/or evaluating
strategies. The function simply returns a random play from the
play-by-play data for a given down, distance, and yards from the team’s
goal, using the usual NFL-coaching strategy.

As you can see in this example, Kirk Cousins threw a touchdown pass
to Stefon Diggs on third down and two from the Minnesota 46 yard line.
Note that we were sampling from the MN 45 yard line in the function
call, however, we include a window argument
(window_yards_from_own_goal
) in the
sample_play()
function with a default set to one yard.
We can also sample plays according to a given pass/rush play strategy. The user may choose a value for the proportion of passing plays to be sampled. Thus one can test strategies in which the team always passes, always runs, or some distribution of the two. This strategy is only intended for downs 1 - 3, and uses an empirical strategy for fourth downs.

This package also offers a way to sample various fourth down
strategies. The user may choose from the following: empirical, always
going for it on fourth down, never going for it on fourth down, go for
it if one is less than a certain distance from a first down/touchdown,
and go for it if it maximizes one’s expected points.The specific fourth
down strategy is passed in to the fourth_down_strategy
argument. The yds_less_than
strategy takes an additional
argument for the distance to from a first down parameter.

Now, we can utilize the above sample play functions to simulate full
drives using the sample_drives()
function. The strategy
options are the same as sample_play()
with varying
parameters based on the chosen strategy. The function also offers the
option to simulate one single possession or until one team scores.
